To Kill a Mockingbird

Students will be reading Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird. Some of the reading will be done in class and some of the reading will be required as homework. I have sent a tentative reading schedule and novel home with each students and I have attached the reading schedule below.

End of the Semester!

Students will be taking the semester exams and ending the 2nd Quarter next week. The semester exam will include the following: Unit 8 Vocabulary Test, Grammar Quiz over Prepositional Phrases, and "The Odyssey" test with a writing prompt. Please be prepared for the exam.

2nd and 5th Period Exam on Wednesday
1st, 4th and 7th Period Exam on Thursday
3rd and 6th Period Exam on Friday

"The Odyssey" Travel Brochure

Students will be creatively designing and developing a travel brochure covering the places and adventures that Odysseus and his crew experienced. This assignment will be handed in the week of exams and class time will be provided to complete this project.

Grammar Lessons - Prepositions (Again)

Students will be given a set of mini-lessons to complete as a class over the next couple weeks. Students will be tested over this material on prepositions on Friday, December 11th. They will be expected to hand in the mini-lessons at that time.

"The Odyssey"

Students will be reading several books from "The Odyssey" by Homer. We will be discussing the material and answering questions to prepare for the final assessment which will be found on the semester exam.

Short Story Theme Analysis

We will develop a theme literary analysis using one of the short stories from the short story unit we just completed. Students will get to choose from "The Most Dangerous Game", "The Necklace", and "The Cask of Amontillado". Students will spend seven days in class developing this analysis with my assistance. This will be a Google Classroom assignment. The final copy of the theme analysis is due Friday, December 4th.

Grammar Lessons - Prepositions

Students will be given a set of mini-lessons to complete as a class over the next couple weeks. Students will be tested over this material on prepositions on Friday, November 20th. They will be expected to hand in the mini-lessons at that time.

Unit 6 Vocabulary

Students will be given the Unit 6 vocabulary words and pages to complete. Some of the assignments will be done in class and others are expected to be completed as homework. The students will hand in all assignments and be tested over the Unit 6 vocabulary words on Friday, November 13th. Please be prepared.

Students will be given a set of mini-lessons to complete as a class over the next couple weeks. Students will be tested over this material on adverbs on Friday, November 6th. They will be expected to hand in the mini-lessons at that time.

Short Story Unit

Students will begin reading a series of short stories from the textbook in class. We will be discussing and learning the elements to a short story. Each short story will have a quiz or a writing assignment that will be completed with each story's completion. This unit will cover the next 4 weeks. The short stories are as follows:

Unit 5 Vocabulary Test

Students will be given the Unit 5 vocabulary words and pages to complete. Some of the assignments will be done in class and others are expected to be completed as homework. The students will hand in all assignments and be tested over the Unit 5 vocabulary words on Friday, October 30th. Please be prepared.

Grammar Lessons - Adjectives

Students will be given a set of mini-lessons to complete as a class over the next couple weeks. Students will be tested over this material on adjectives on Friday, October 23rd. They will be expected to hand in the mini-lessons at that time.

Unit 4 Vocabulary Test

Students will be given the Unit 4 vocabulary words and pages to complete. Some of the assignments will be done in class and others are expected to be completed as homework. The students will hand in all assignments and be tested over the Unit 4 vocabulary words on Friday, October 16th. Please be prepared.

Of Mice and Men

We will begin reading Of Mice and Men in class. Students will be given a study guide to complete with each chapter and will be quizzed throughout the novel. We will be testing over the novel on Thursday, October 22nd. Students will be expected to hand in their study guides at that time.

Grammar Lessons - Pronouns

Students will be given a set of mini-lessons to complete as a class over the next couple weeks. Students will be tested over this material on pronouns on Friday, October 9th. They will be expected to hand in the mini-lessons at that time.

Personal Narrative

Students will be developing a personal narrative in class. We will be planning, writing, editing and revising this formal piece of writing. The final copy will be due Wednesday, October 7th.

Unit 3 Vocabulary

Students will be given the Unit 3 vocabulary words and pages to complete. Some of the assignments will be done in class and others are expected to be completed as homework. The students will hand in all assignments and be tested over the Unit 3 vocabulary words on Friday, October 2nd. Please be prepared.

Grammar Lessons - Noun

Students will be given a set of mini-lessons to complete as a class over the next couple weeks. Students will be tested over this material on nouns on Friday, September 25th. They will be expected to hand in the mini-lessons at that time.

Unit 2 Vocabulary

Students are expected to complete the Unit 2 vocabulary assignments from the book on their own time over the next two weeks. Please be prepared to hand in the work pages and take the test on Friday, September 18th.

A Separate Peace

Students will be reading A Separate Peace. We will discuss the novel in class and complete assignments analyzing the story in depth. Please stay on top of the reading and assignments over the course of the next couple weeks. Test over the novel will be given on Wednesday, September 23rd.

A Lesson Before Dying

Students have been given a study guide for A Lesson Before Dying. We are completing this in class in preparation for the final test over the summer reading novel. This test will be given on Thursday, September 3rd. They will be handing in the study guide for credit the day of the class.

Animal Farm

Students are presenting their Animal Farm Life Box project to the class this week. Students will be tested over the novel on Wednesday, August 26th.

Writer's Notebook

Students will be using a writer's notebook over the course of the school year. This notebook will be kept in the room. Please bring a writer's notebook to class by Tuesday, August 25th so we may begin using them.
